Gaafu Dhaalu occupies the southern administrative section of the natural Huvadhoo Atoll, more than 400 kilometres from Malé. Travellers choose the region for its spacious islands, extensive coral reefs, diving and surfing along the southern edge of the Maldivian archipelago.

Gaafu Dhaalu differs from neighbouring Gaafu Alifu in its resort locations, transfer routes and access to the surf breaks of southern Huvadhoo. Reaching the region takes longer than travelling to atolls near Malé, making it better suited to holidays of at least seven nights.

Resorts in Gaafu Dhaalu

Resorts in the region include Ayada Maldives and NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort. Both offer beach and overwater villas, swimming pools, restaurants, spa programmes, diving and water sports, but they provide different styles of holiday.

Ayada Maldives occupies Maguhdhuvaa Island and offers pool villas, an extensive choice of restaurants, a children’s club and programmes for couples and families. It also suits guests who want to combine a beach holiday with diving or surfing.

NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort is located on Havodda Island. Its key features include convenient access to the house reef, beach and overwater villas, a children’s club and a short speedboat transfer from Kaadedhdhoo Airport.

Resort selection should consider the size of the island, quality of the house reef, lagoon depth, meal plan and villa location. Families may prioritise children’s facilities and accommodation for several guests, while couples often prefer pool villas positioned away from the island’s busier areas.

Diving and snorkelling

Gaafu Dhaalu is surrounded by outer reefs and deep channels connecting its lagoon with the open ocean. Diving includes coral walls, channels and sites influenced by stronger currents. Depending on the season and location, marine encounters may include reef sharks, rays, turtles, tuna, barracuda and large schools of fish.

Snorkelling conditions vary between islands. If the house reef is a priority, travellers should check the distance between the beach and reef edge as well as the most convenient entry points before choosing a resort.

Surfing in Gaafu Dhaalu

Recognised surf breaks along the southern rim of Huvadhoo include Beacons, Tiger Stripes, Castaways, Blue Bowls, Airports, Five Islands and Love Charms. Most are reached by boat.

Conditions are generally better suited to experienced surfers because wave characteristics and currents vary between breaks. Resort selection should therefore consider the distance to suitable waves, availability of dedicated boat transfers and access to professional guiding.

The Maldives surfing season generally runs from mid-February to November. The most consistent conditions are often found from March to May and from September until the end of November.

The best time to visit

November to April usually brings sunnier weather and lower rainfall, making it suitable for beach holidays, snorkelling and family travel. May to October has a greater chance of wind and brief tropical showers but can provide more interesting conditions for surfing.

Getting to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll

Travel to Gaafu Dhaalu includes an international flight to Velana International Airport, a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo or Maavarulu and an onward speedboat transfer. The airport used depends on the resort and current flight schedule.

The domestic flight from Malé usually takes approximately 55–70 minutes, followed by a speedboat journey of between 15 and 50 minutes. NH Collection Maldives Havodda is normally reached through Kaadedhdhoo with a 15-minute boat transfer. Ayada Maldives can be accessed through either Kaadedhdhoo or Maavarulu.
