Gan Island and the history of Addu

Gan Island has an international airport serving flights from Malé and selected international routes. A British Royal Air Force base operated here during the mid-20th century, leaving traces in the island’s architecture and layout.

The historical journey can continue through the other districts of Addu City. Addu is considered one of the longest-inhabited regions of the Maldives, offering an opportunity to experience the country beyond its traditional resort islands.

Addu Nature Park

Addu Nature Park is located on Hithadhoo Island. Its landscapes include mangroves, wetlands, lakes and bird habitats. Visitors can explore the park by bicycle, follow a guided trail or take a canoe trip through its waterways.

A visit can be combined with a driving tour of the connected islands, coastal stops and an introduction to the natural landscapes of the southern Maldives. Opening times and available activities should be confirmed before travelling.

Diving and snorkelling

Addu is known for its outer reefs, ocean channels and shark observation sites. Currents vary between locations, so dive centres select sites according to each diver’s experience and current weather conditions. Snorkelling, boat trips and marine-life encounters can also be included in a tailored programme.

When to visit and how to get there

November to April generally brings drier conditions across the Maldives. From May to October, tropical showers, stronger winds and changes in underwater visibility are possible.

The usual route connects through Velana International Airport in Malé, followed by a flight to Gan International Airport. The final journey is completed by road or boat, depending on the selected accommodation.
