Tailor-made journeys through Lithuania
Lithuania brings together Baroque architecture, medieval castles, lake scenery and the Baltic coast. A journey can begin in Vilnius, continue to Trakai and Kaunas, and then travel through Klaipėda to the dunes of the Curonian Spit. Relatively short distances make it possible to explore contrasting parts of the country without changing hotels every day.
Vilnius and its historic quarters
The historic centre of Vilnius is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical architecture can all be found within its medieval street plan. Principal landmarks include Cathedral Square, St Anne’s Church, Vilnius University, the Gate of Dawn and the palaces of the Old Town.
The programme may also include art collections, studios of local creators and restaurants presenting contemporary Lithuanian cuisine. Two or three days allow enough time to explore the central districts without overcrowding the schedule.
Trakai and Kaunas
Trakai Island Castle stands on Lake Galvė, approximately half an hour from Vilnius by car. A visit can be combined with a journey across the lake and an introduction to the heritage of the town’s Karaite community.
Kaunas presents a markedly different architectural character. The city is recognised for its interwar modernist buildings, now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage property, as well as its Old Town and museums. Nearby, Pažaislis Monastery is one of Lithuania’s most distinguished Baroque ensembles.
Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit
Klaipėda is the gateway to the Curonian Spit. A ferry connects the port with the peninsula, where sand dunes meet pine forests, fishing settlements and the Baltic shoreline.
Nida is the principal base for exploring the Lithuanian section of the spit. From here, travellers can reach the Parnidis Dune, galleries, lighthouses and nature trails. Summer is particularly suited to coastal walks and cycling between the settlements.
When to travel
May to September is the most suitable period for journeys across the country and time beside the sea. Spring and autumn are well suited to Vilnius, Trakai and Kaunas, while winter places greater emphasis on museums, concerts and restorative programmes in Druskininkai.
Four days are sufficient for Vilnius and Trakai. Including Kaunas and the Curonian Spit extends the journey to seven or ten days, with road transfers and the Klaipėda ferry arranged in advance.
