Tailor-made journeys through Greenland
Greenland combines glaciers and Arctic fjords with small towns, contemporary life and the traditions of the Kalaallit, the island’s Indigenous people. Most itineraries focus on one or two regions. Long distances, changing weather and the absence of roads between towns make carefully coordinated logistics an essential part of every journey.
Ilulissat and Disko Bay
Ilulissat stands beside the UNESCO-listed Icefjord, where immense icebergs travel towards Disko Bay and continually reshape the view. They can be observed from coastal walking trails, during boat journeys or from a lodge overlooking the water.
Summer programmes can include sailing beneath the midnight sun, hiking and whale watching. Winter brings dog-sled journeys and opportunities to see the northern lights, although available activities always depend on the month and local ice conditions.
Nuuk and contemporary Greenlandic culture
Nuuk provides an introduction to both the history and present-day culture of Greenland. A stay may include the Greenland National Museum, art galleries, local cuisine and a boat journey through the surrounding fjord system. Several nights in the capital can be combined efficiently with Ilulissat or South Greenland.
The south presents greener valleys, working farms and traces of Norse settlements. The UNESCO-listed cultural landscape of Kujataa reflects centuries of farming, hunting and fishing at the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
East Greenland
Tasiilaq and Kulusuk provide access to the mountain valleys, ice-filled waters and small communities of the east coast. Summer is suited to hiking, kayaking and boat expeditions, while winter opens possibilities for ski journeys and dog sledding. Infrastructure is limited, making advance coordination of flights, guides and the length of each stay particularly important.
Seasons and travel logistics
June to September is generally best for sailing, walking and combining several regions. The darker months bring northern lights, while winter journeys require specialised clothing and a flexible schedule. Travel between Greenlandic towns is by aircraft, helicopter or boat rather than by road.
Weather can delay domestic flights and sea transfers. International connections should therefore be planned with sufficient time between sectors, particularly when an itinerary includes a remote coastal community or more than one region.
