Tailor-made journeys through Malta
The Maltese archipelago combines the legacy of the Knights of St John, prehistoric temples, fortified cities and the Mediterranean coast. Short distances make it possible to balance cultural visits with journeys by sea and several days on Gozo. Hotel selection should consider not only category but also access to Valletta, the coast and the principal harbours.
Valletta and the Three Cities
Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, the city preserves an integrated ensemble of fortifications, palaces and churches. A programme may include St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master’s Palace, the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Manoel Theatre.
Across the Grand Harbour lie Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua, collectively known as the Three Cities. They are best explored on a separate visit through their forts, waterfronts and historic quarters. Approaching Valletta from the harbour also reveals the scale and structure of the capital’s defences.
Mdina and Malta’s earliest heritage
Mdina, Malta’s former capital, is enclosed by fortified walls and lined with historic residences. A visit is often combined with neighbouring Rabat and the Catacombs of St Paul.
The islands’ earliest heritage includes the megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, as well as the underground Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. Daily admission to the hypogeum is limited, making advance reservations essential.
Gozo and Comino
Gozo is characterised by a rocky coastline, small settlements and rural landscapes. Principal sites include the Citadel in Victoria, the Ġgantija Temples, Xlendi Bay and coastal caves. Two or three nights provide a more complete introduction to the island.
Comino is visited for journeys by sea and the clear waters of the Blue Lagoon. Boat departures and access to individual coves depend on weather and sea conditions.
When to travel
Spring, autumn and Malta’s mild winter are well suited to cultural journeys. The main swimming season generally extends from May to October, while July and August bring higher temperatures and visitor numbers. Five to seven days are sufficient for a first visit. Adding a full stay on Gozo extends the journey to eight or ten days.
