It suits travellers who want convenient access to the island’s evening life.
Saint-Jean combines a long beach, waterfront dining and one of Saint Barthélemy’s defining sights: small aircraft descending above the bay. When choosing accommodation, it is worth considering the orientation of the hillside, prevailing winds, sea views and ease of road access.
Choosing the right beach
Gouverneur and Saline are known for broad stretches of pale sand and uninterrupted sea views. Both have limited facilities, so visitors should bring water and anything required for the day.
Colombier lies within the island’s marine nature reserve and cannot be reached by road. Access is by boat or along a walking trail that takes approximately half an hour. Colombier and Petit Cul-de-Sac offer opportunities for snorkelling, while the shallow lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac is well suited to water activities and families with children.
Villa or hotel
A villa suits families and groups seeking generous living space, a pool and the freedom to arrange each day independently. The selection should consider the number of equally comfortable bedrooms, pool safety for children, beach access and the gradient of the approach road.
A hotel is often more convenient when daily service, restaurants, a wellness centre and an equipped beachfront setting are priorities. The most sought-after options require particularly early booking for the festive season.
Getting there and the best time to visit
The principal gateway is Saint Martin. Small aircraft connect the neighbouring island with Saint Barthélemy, while ferries arrive in Gustavia. Sufficient time should be allowed between international and local flights because Saint Barthélemy Airport operates during daylight hours.
November to April generally brings drier conditions. Christmas and New Year form the busiest period of the season. May to November is warmer and wetter. Seven to ten nights allow enough time to experience different beaches without turning the stay into a daily schedule of excursions.
