To the west of the historical core of Dubrovnik lies the large, wooded peninsula of Lapad, with the Petka hill rising on it. Today, Lapad is a suburb, an area of the most developed tourism with a large number of hotels and a rich tourist offer. In the past, Lapad was full of Renaissance villas, of which the most famous is certainly the palace of Petar Sorkočević, located at the beginning of the peninsula, on the other side of Gruž.

The villa is located under a wooded hillock right by the sea. It was built from the 20s to the 80s of the 15th century in the Gothic-Renaissance style. The two-story building shows Renaissance features on the ground floor, while the single-arched and triple-arched windows on the second floor are Gothic in nature. The entire villa complex is surrounded by a high wall. The garden with lush vegetation is located on two levels. Near the garden there is also a wide pond.

The villa also has a small protected sala with a chapel, and the front of the second floor faces a wide terrace, under which there is a cistern. Currently, the Sorkočević villa houses the Historical Institute of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

On Lapad is the famous Church of St. Michael and next to it the old cemetery of the Dubrovnik patricians. The Church of Our Lady of Mercy was built with donations from those grateful for the rescue of sailors and therefore has a large collection of donation paintings of old ships.
