Planning a Beach Holiday in Búzios

Búzios is a coastal town set on a peninsula in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Its shoreline features more than twenty beaches, ranging from sheltered bays with calmer water to open stretches suited to surfing. Choosing the right location is therefore more important than simply selecting a hotel category.

Choosing the Right Area

The centre and Armação are convenient for restaurants, the Orla Bardot waterfront and the pier used by local boat excursions. Armação itself, however, has limited sand in several sections, so travellers planning daily beach time may prefer accommodation elsewhere.

Tartaruga is known for its sheltered setting and calmer water. Geribá offers a wider beach, stronger waves and a more active atmosphere, making it a better choice for surfing. Hotel location should also be assessed carefully, as the peninsula is hilly and walking distances can feel longer than they appear on a map.

When to Visit

Búzios can be visited throughout the year. December to March brings warmer summer weather and higher demand, particularly around national holidays and Carnival. Other months are generally quieter. Water temperature, wind and wave conditions may vary considerably between beaches because they face different sides of the peninsula.

Búzios combines naturally with Rio de Janeiro as a coastal extension of a wider Brazilian itinerary. Allow for a road transfer and several full days to enjoy the beaches, waterfront and boat journeys without rushing.
