Ho Chi Minh City holidays: discovering Southern Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely known as Saigon, is Southern Vietnam’s largest metropolis and a natural starting point for exploring the region. French-influenced architecture, traditional markets, historic temples, contemporary neighbourhoods and a diverse dining scene shape its distinctive character.

This is a cultural and gastronomic city destination rather than a beach resort. Two to four nights are generally suitable for a first visit, while a longer stay allows time for excursions beyond the city.

What to see and experience

Many of the principal landmarks are concentrated in the central area. A walking itinerary may connect the Reunification Palace, Central Post Office, Saigon Opera House, Dong Khoi Street and Nguyen Hue pedestrian boulevard.

The War Remnants Museum and Fine Arts Museum provide further historical and cultural context. Cholon offers a different perspective, with traditional temples, markets and a strong Chinese-Vietnamese heritage. As it lies away from the main downtown sights, it is best explored as a separate part of the itinerary.

Food is an essential part of the city experience. Travellers can combine street-food stalls and family-run establishments with contemporary Vietnamese restaurants and more refined dining.

Choosing the right area to stay

The downtown area around the Opera House, Dong Khoi Street and the Saigon River is the most convenient choice for a first visit. Major sights, restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and many established high-end hotels are located here.

The Ben Thanh area has a busier and more informal atmosphere. It suits travellers interested in markets, local dining and independent exploration, although street noise and traffic should be considered.

The area traditionally known as District 3 offers a quieter residential setting, historic architecture and local cafés. It remains close to the centre, but some journeys will require a short drive.

When to visit Ho Chi Minh City

The city remains warm throughout the year. December to April is generally drier and more convenient for walking tours, while April and May can be particularly hot.

The wetter season usually extends from May to November. Rain can be heavy but is often limited to part of the day, so travel remains practical with a flexible itinerary.

Planning the wider journey

A visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels requires at least half a day. The Mekong Delta is better planned as a full-day excursion or an overnight stay when a more detailed regional experience is preferred.

Hotel selection should consider the exact neighbourhood, street noise, walking access and transfer time to Tan Son Nhat Airport. Heavy traffic can make relatively short journeys take longer than expected.
