Day 5 Okavango Delta

A full day safari in the Okavango Delta.

The Okavango Delta is not only the world's largest inland delta; the unique character of this area is also given by the collision of extremely fertile swamps and arid lands of the Kalahari Desert. Even on a continent as vast as Africa, the Okavango Delta is one of the largest untouched regions.

The delta is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. The upper part of the delta is covered with dense reed beds, dominated by papyrus. There are also areas of permanent water, where many water lilies grow, and where pygmy geese live, feeding almost exclusively on the fruits of the delta. This marshy environment is ideal for a variety of animals, including hippopotamus, crocodile and several species of antelope. Of these, the most notable is the sitatunga, which has adapted to life in the water and lives mainly in the most impassable areas of the Okavango Delta and in other similar areas of Africa. Another family of antelope, even more specific to South Africa, has also adapted to the aquatic environment - the waterbucks, represented by the swampbuck, puku and lechwe. The Okavango Delta has the largest concentration of red lechwes, with at least 20,000 individuals living in the flooded grasslands.
