Tailor-made journeys through Rwanda
Rwanda brings together volcanic mountains, rainforest, savannah and lakes within a relatively compact country. Several national parks can be included in one itinerary, although winding roads and early trekking departures require careful planning. Seven or eight days suit two regions, while a journey including Nyungwe works better over ten to twelve days.
Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park protects part of the Virunga Massif and the habitat of the endangered mountain gorilla. A permit is required for gorilla trekking, with a limited number available each day. The date should be confirmed at the same time as the main journey.
Treks begin in the morning after guests have been assigned to groups. The time required to locate the gorillas varies, and the route may cross wet forest, mud and steep slopes. Long clothing, a waterproof jacket, gloves, gaiters and sturdy trekking boots are recommended. Visitors showing symptoms of an infectious illness are not permitted to approach the gorillas.
At least two or three nights should be planned near the park. An additional day can include golden monkey tracking, mountain walks or the area around Lakes Burera and Ruhondo.
Safari in Akagera National Park
Akagera contrasts with Rwanda’s highlands through its savannah, wetlands and network of lakes. Lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, leopards, giraffes, zebras and antelope inhabit the park, although individual wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
Two nights allow time for game drives and a journey through different sections of the park. A boat excursion on Lake Ihema adds opportunities to observe hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds.
Nyungwe Forest and Lake Kivu
Nyungwe National Park is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage property. Its principal experiences include chimpanzee trekking, other primate encounters, forest trails and the suspended canopy walkway. Chimpanzees move freely through the forest, so sightings cannot be promised in advance.
Tea estates surround Nyungwe, while Lake Kivu provides a natural stop between the forest and Volcanoes National Park. Including the lake helps divide the longer road journeys and adds several less active days to the itinerary.
When to travel and how to plan
Trekking operates throughout the year. June to September and December to February are generally drier, making mountain trails easier to negotiate. The wetter months bring particularly green landscapes but also muddier and more slippery routes. Rain and cooler temperatures remain possible in the highlands at any time.
At least one night should be included in Kigali. Trekking permits, entry requirements and medical guidance must be checked before departure.
