In Africa, seasonality is everything. The same destination can become a trip of a lifetime—or disappointing if you choose the wrong time to visit. The weather, landscapes, animal activity, and tourist numbers are directly affected by the season. Therefore, when planning a trip to Africa, it's important not only where to go, but also when. We've prepared an Africa travel calendar to show you where and when the most interesting natural events occur, and the best time to plan your trip.
JANUARY | MAURITIUS January is one of the best months for a vacation in Mauritius. The island is in the midst of a tropical summer: the ocean is warm and calm, the air is filled with the scent of blossoming trees, and the days pass under the bright sun. This is the perfect time for boat trips, snorkeling on coral reefs, and lazy days on white-sand beaches. On the island, you can explore tea plantations, waterfalls, and national parks, green after the seasonal rains. |
| TANZANIA February is one of the most exciting months for safari. Wildebeest calving season begins on the southern plains of the Serengeti. Thousands of animals gather on the open plains, and the savannah fills with movement: newborn calves take their first steps, and herds continue to slowly move across the vast expanses. UGANDA AND RWANDA This month also offers excellent conditions for mountain gorilla trekking. Dry weather facilitates travel along mountain trails, and visibility in the jungle improves. |
MARCH | BOTSWANA Experienced travelers call March the "secret season." The rains gradually end, the savannah becomes bright green, the air is fresh, and there are significantly fewer tourists than during the high season. During this period, in the Makgadikgadi salt pans, you can witness one of Africa's most spectacular migrations – the movement of thousands of zebras across the Kalahari plains. Baby antelopes and other animals emerge from the fresh greenery, and you'll often encounter no other vehicles on safari. |
APRIL | Victoria Falls After the rainy season, the Zambezi River becomes especially full, and Victoria Falls reaches its peak. Enormous torrents of water cascade into the gorge, raising clouds of mist visible for miles. The spectacle is so spectacular that the falls are known as "the thundering smoke." Mozambique The best time for diving and beach holidays begins on the Indian Ocean coast. The white beaches of the Bazaruto and Kwinya archipelagos, clear waters, and rich underwater world make Mozambique one of the most beautiful ocean holiday destinations. |
MAY | Namibia May marks the beginning of the dry season in southern Africa. In Namibia, this is a particularly good time for a safari: the rains are ending, the temperatures are still comfortable, and the landscapes still retain the freshness of the rainy season. In Etosha National Park, animals often congregate at watering holes, making it easier to observe them. MAURITIUS The hot and humid summer in Mauritius is ending. The weather becomes mild – around 25-27°C – the ocean is warm, and there are significantly fewer tourists than during the peak winter season. |
JUNE | TANZANIA June marks the beginning of the classic safari season in East Africa. After the rains, the roads dry out, the air becomes clear, and the animals begin to actively migrate again. In the Serengeti, herds of wildebeest head north toward the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. This marks the beginning of a new stage of the Great Migration. RWANDA AND UGANDA June is considered the beginning of the best time for mountain gorilla trekking. Rainfall has almost ceased, and temperatures in the mountains hover around 23-25°C, creating comfortable conditions for long walks through the forest. |
JULY | KENYA By midsummer, the Great Migration begins in the Masai Mara. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras cross the border between Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh pastures. Sometimes, it's in July that you can see the first crossings of the Mara River—dramatic scenes that have become a symbol of the African safari. ZANZIBAR After a few days in the savannah, many travelers head to Zanzibar. July is one of the most comfortable months on the island: clear and sunny days, and the ocean is calm and warm most of the time. |
AUGUST | BOTSWANA August in Botswana is the best time for a classic safari: the vegetation is sparse, and animals are easy to spot near the water. During this time, waters from Angola's rainy regions reach the Okavango Delta, flowing through its channels and lagoons. This offers the opportunity to go on a boat safari in a traditional mokoro canoe and observe crocodiles, hippos, and other inhabitants of the delta. MADAGASCAR August is the height of the dry season. In national parks, it's easy to navigate through tropical forests and spot lemurs, fossas, and chameleons. Furthermore, the humpback whale migration, one of the region's most spectacular marine spectacles, takes place off the east coast of Madagascar during this time. |
SEPTEMBER | KENYA September is often called the "velvet season" for safari enthusiasts. The Great Migration in the Masai Mara continues, but there are fewer tourists than in July and August. RWANDA The Kwita Izina ceremony, where newborn mountain gorillas are ceremoniously named, takes place in Rwanda. This celebration attracts guests from around the world and reminds everyone of the importance of protecting these rare animals. |
OKTOBER | South Africa October marks the height of spring in southern Africa. In Cape Town, mild, sunny weather arrives, and the summer terraces of restaurants and wineries open. Whale watching season continues on the coast of the Western Cape, where southern right whales can be seen nesting off the coast. |
NOVEMBER | BOTSWANA After the first rains, the savannah comes alive: young antelope and zebra appear, and predators quickly follow the herds. A special vitality permeates the bush, making safaris especially intense. ZANZIBAR Zanzibar has a short rainy season: rainfall is usually brief and quickly gives way to sunshine. The island becomes calmer and quieter: the beaches are almost empty, the ocean is warm, and the days flow with a relaxed island tempo. |
DECEMBER | TANZANIA By mid-December, the short rains end, and the wildebeest herds begin to return to the southern plains of the Serengeti. Soon, calves will be born, and the savannah will once again come alive with thousands of animals. South Africa It's the height of summer in South Africa. Cape Town is in full swing: food festivals are held, wineries host concerts, and the beaches of the Cape Peninsula fill with ocean and surf lovers. |
