Tailor-made journeys through Portugal
Portugal brings together historic cities, wine regions, Atlantic shores and volcanic islands. One well-paced journey can combine Lisbon, Sintra, Porto and the Douro Valley, while another might lead south from the capital through the Alentejo to the Algarve. Madeira and the Azores work better as separate destinations or as distinct chapters of a longer itinerary.
Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais
Hotel location in Lisbon should reflect the preferred atmosphere. Baixa is convenient for a first visit, Chiado provides easy access to restaurants and theatres, while Belém suits walks beside the Tagus. A cultural programme can include the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and an evening of fado.
Sintra is easily reached from the capital, although its UNESCO-listed cultural landscape deserves a full day. Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and historic estates are scattered across forested hills. The route can continue to Cabo da Roca and Cascais on the Atlantic coast.
Porto and the vineyards of the Douro
Porto’s historic centre, the Luís I Bridge and the opposite bank of the Douro form part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. An introduction to the city can begin at São Bento Station, descend through the streets of Ribeira and continue to the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Douro Valley deserves more than a brief day trip. One or two nights at a wine estate allow time to explore its terraced vineyards by road, train or boat. Harvest dates vary each year, so visits and tastings during this period should be arranged well in advance.
The Alentejo and the Algarve coast
The Alentejo creates a natural link between Lisbon and the Algarve. Its defining places include historic Évora, wine estates, olive groves and small fortified towns.
Experiences in the Algarve vary along the coast. Lagos and Sagres are known for cliffs and the open Atlantic, the central region combines beaches with renowned golf courses, and the east has the islands and lagoons of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Atlantic waters remain cooler than the Mediterranean, an important consideration when choosing travel dates.
The best time to visit Portugal
April to June and September to October suit cultural and wine-focused itineraries. Beach stays in the Algarve are generally planned for summer and early autumn. Madeira is rewarding throughout the year, while conditions in the Azores can change quickly. Ten to fourteen days are recommended for a mainland journey combining several regions.
