Tailor-made journeys through Nepal
Nepal combines the medieval cities of the Kathmandu Valley, the lakes of Pokhara, Himalayan trails and the national parks of the southern plains. Each journey should reflect the altitude, the travellers’ physical preparation and the season. A first visit can combine Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan, with a mountain journey planned as a separate part of the itinerary.
Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur
The Kathmandu Valley World Heritage site includes the Durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, together with the religious ensembles of Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. Time should be allowed between visits: distances are limited, but traffic can be slow.
The workshops of Patan and Bhaktapur introduce travellers to local metalwork, woodcarving and pottery. Temple visits require respectful clothing and behaviour, while access to some sacred areas is restricted.
Pokhara and Annapurna
Pokhara lies beside Phewa Lake and serves as a gateway to the Annapurna region. A stay here can combine time by the water, walks in the surrounding hills and shorter mountain journeys. Himalayan views depend on cloud cover, making an additional flexible day worthwhile.
In the mountains, walking distance is less important than elevation gain and the time required for safe acclimatisation.
Sagarmatha and Himalayan trails
Sagarmatha National Park encompasses high valleys, glaciers and the Everest region. Protected areas require permits, registration documents and, on many routes, an authorised local guide. Above 3,000 metres, elevation should be gained gradually and rest days must be included.
Mountain weather frequently delays domestic flights. An international departure should therefore not be scheduled immediately after returning from a remote region.
Chitwan and the best time to visit
Chitwan National Park is known for its lowland forests, greater one-horned rhinoceroses, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. It can be added after a cultural programme or mountain journey.
October–November and March–May are generally the most suitable periods. Winter brings colder conditions and snow at altitude, while the monsoon from June to September can cause landslides, flooding and road closures. The condition of each route and all domestic transport should be confirmed before departure.
