Mauritius: More Than a Beach Holiday

20.10.2026

Mauritius has long outgrown the classic idea of an island holiday. Today it is one of the most multifaceted destinations in the Indian Ocean, where a single trip can combine superb beaches, nature, gastronomy, active adventures and wellness.

Interest in the island keeps growing. In 2025 Mauritius welcomed more than 1.4 million tourists, and in the first quarter of 2026 arrivals rose by a further 6.8%. So what lies behind its popularity?

Mauritius: More Than a Beach Holiday

An island worth exploring

Mauritius: More Than a Beach Holiday

The main advantage of Mauritius is its variety. There is no need to spend your entire holiday within the resort. In just a few days you can see the famous landscapes of Le Morne and the remarkable “underwater waterfall” from a helicopter, head out to sea to watch dolphins and whales, visit waterfalls and nature reserves, taste Mauritian rum right at the distillery or spend a day on a yacht around the small offshore islands.

Mauritius: More Than a Beach Holiday

For active travellers there is golf, trekking, ziplining, quad biking, kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling. Those who prefer a slower pace can enjoy spa and wellness programmes, gastronomic trails, private cruises and dinners in unusual settings.

For every kind of traveller

Mauritius is just as rewarding for couples as for families with children, large families or groups of friends. For a romantic escape there are boutique hotels, villas with private pools, yachts, helicopter flights and secluded beaches.

Families will appreciate spacious rooms and residences, safe lagoons, kids’ clubs with thoughtful programmes and plenty to keep teenagers busy, from water sports to discovering the island’s nature.

For VIP guests Mauritius offers an entirely different level of travel: private villas, personal butlers, individual transfers, helicopters and yachts, private dining and programmes created entirely around the guest’s wishes.

Mauritius – for those who want to say “yes” by the ocean

For newlyweds Mauritius holds a special magic – it is one of the finest destinations for weddings and honeymoons. The ocean, calm lagoons, tropical gardens and secluded bays make it possible to hold a wedding that needs almost no decoration – the island itself is the setting. You can have a symbolic ceremony or an official civil marriage. The format can vary completely: from an intimate ceremony for two, barefoot on the sand, to an elegant celebration at one of the island’s finest hotels, on a private villa or in a tropical garden.

A wedding in Mauritius is easily designed around the couple: exchange vows on the shore, enjoy a candlelit dinner on the beach, sail out on a yacht or see the island from above on a helicopter flight. There is no need to follow a ready-made format – every story can be completely individual.

Timing matters especially for a wedding. Some of the most comfortable periods are October to the first half of December, as well as April and May. This is a wonderful time for outdoor ceremonies and celebrations, when warm weather comes with more comfortable humidity.

October and November are particularly well suited to an oceanside wedding: after the cooler winter months it gets warmer, the days are full of sunshine and the evenings are perfect for dining under the open sky. The first half of December can also be an excellent choice, before the hotter and more humid season arrives.

April and May are another especially pleasant period. The summer heat gradually softens, humidity drops and the temperature is ideal for beach ceremonies, sunset photo shoots and long evenings by the ocean.

Mauritius: More Than a Beach Holiday

And perhaps one of the greatest advantages of a wedding in Mauritius is that the honeymoon begins right here. After the celebration all that remains is to enjoy the island together: leisurely breakfasts overlooking the ocean, spa rituals, yacht trips, picnics on secluded beaches and dinners under the stars. A wedding in Mauritius is not just one special day – it is the beginning of a shared journey you will remember for a lifetime.

Each coast has its own character

One of the island’s defining features is its remarkable diversity. Mauritius is relatively small, yet as soon as you move from one coast to another the landscapes, the pace of the holiday, the character of the lagoon and even the feel of the weather change.

The north is livelier and more cosmopolitan. This is where you will find restaurants, cafés, shops, beach clubs and resort life beyond the hotels. The north and north-west coasts are less exposed to the trade winds, which makes them especially comfortable in the cooler months, roughly from June to September. It is a good choice for those who want to combine a beach holiday with exploring the island independently.

The west is more relaxed, with beautiful sunsets and a calm atmosphere. From June to September the west and north-west are particularly attractive thanks to their more sheltered position. The west coast is also a frequent choice for families with children, although the specifics of each beach and lagoon should be taken into account.

The east means long pale beaches, wide turquoise lagoons and a sense of space. Some of the most iconic luxury resorts in Mauritius are located here, such as Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita. The east coast is more open to the trade winds, so from June to September it can be fresher and windier. In the hotter months, by contrast, the ocean breeze becomes an advantage, making temperatures by the sea more pleasant.

The south reveals another side of Mauritius – wilder and more dramatic. Here tropical greenery meets striking coastlines, and the resort atmosphere gives way to a sense of nature and privacy. When choosing the south for a holiday with young children, it is especially important to consider the location of the hotel and the characteristics of its beach.

Almost all of Mauritius is encircled by a coral reef, which has formed natural lagoons along the coast. Yet the lagoons are very different: in some places the water stays shallow far from the shore, in others it deepens quickly; the seabed, the width of the beach and the strength of the wind also vary. That is why, for families with young children, the choice of a specific hotel beach matters as much as the choice of coast.

Those who love shallow, warm, calm water and a gentle entry should look in particular at the north and north-west, as well as certain beaches on the west and east coasts. At the same time, a very shallow lagoon does not suit everyone: keen swimmers will be more comfortable where sufficient depth begins closer to the shore.

Microclimate is another feature of Mauritius. From June to September, travellers looking for a classic beach holiday usually choose the north, north-west and west, where the south-east trade wind is less noticeable. From October to May the choice of coast becomes much wider, and in the hottest months the east is especially pleasant thanks to the ocean breeze.

This is why in Mauritius it is important to choose more than just a beautiful hotel. The coast, the season and the character of the lagoon and beach should match the traveller’s idea of the perfect holiday.

A new kind of holiday in Mauritius

Today’s travellers less and less want to choose between the beach and experiences – and this is exactly where Mauritius shines. You can play golf or explore the island in the morning, return to the beach in the afternoon, head out for a gastronomic dinner in the evening and spend the whole of the next day on the ocean.

It is easy to create a 10–14-day journey here that never becomes monotonous: devote a few days to relaxation, then add nature and adventure, gastronomy, wellness and private boat trips. For a longer itinerary, Mauritius combines beautifully with a safari in Tanzania, the Seychelles or a stopover in Dubai.

Mauritius today is not just a beautiful hotel on the Indian Ocean. It is a destination that allows a completely different journey to be created for every guest – from a relaxed family holiday to an action-packed luxury adventure.
