Palais Coburg: Imperial Heritage in the Heart of Vienna

04.09.2026

Palais Coburg, a witness to the grandeur of the Austrian Empire, has reopened its doors. Its history is closely tied to the European aristocracy and the architectural development of Vienna (Austria). It began in the 16th century with the construction of the Braunbastei city wall. In 1840-1845 Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg built the late-Classicist Palais Coburg on the wall, with its striking colonnade. From 1849 it was the residence of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Clémentine of Orléans, and in 1857 Emperor Franz Joseph I ordered the city walls to be demolished to make way for the Ringstrasse.

Palais Coburg was one of the few buildings to survive this transformation. It opened as a five-star hotel in 2003 and is now a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. In 2026 it welcomed guests again after a complete renovation.

Suites

The hotel’s 36 suites are designed in royal, classic or contemporary style and named after members of the dynasty. The collection includes two-storey Gallery Suites with historic architecture, individual design and touches such as a private library or in-suite sauna, many suitable for large families (Multi-Bedroom Suites), as well as contemporary loft suites with kitchens, balconies or terraces and fine finishes.

Dining and wine

The restaurants and bars occupy the royal state rooms. Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant, with two Michelin stars and five Gault&Millau toques, offers surprising tasting menus with a distinctive signature. Prunkräume is open all day and also hosts brunches and afternoon tea.

Six legendary cellars, as old as the Braunbastei, hold one of Europe’s most important wine collections and the eighth largest in the world: more than 60,000 bottles of 5,000 labels spanning four centuries. Recognised with The Grand Award by Wine Spectator, it is a true treasure, and tastings are held for hotel guests.

Music, spa and events

On Sunday mornings guests can enjoy Coburg Matinée classical concerts, while Candlelight concerts feature contemporary hits and classics in instrumental arrangements by the light of thousands of candles. The spa has a pool with 9-metre lanes and natural light, a Finnish sauna and steam room, an orangery opening onto a sunny terrace, a yoga studio and a gym, with beauty rituals, massages and restorative and rejuvenating programmes.

Palais Coburg is a superb venue for corporate and private events, from weddings and parties to presentations and conferences, with daylight salons and halls, underground galleries in former medieval casemates, an orangery and a garden, and a team that supports every stage from concept to technical delivery and catering. The hotel also offers tours of Vienna and its surroundings – palaces, museums, parks, the opera, concert halls and the National Library – with all the main sights within walking distance.

Would you like to stay at Palais Coburg? Our Vienna team will book your suite, a table at Silvio Nickol and opera tickets, and arrange a gourmet programme.
