Holidays in Biarritz
Hotels
The charming French town of Biarritz is nestled on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, a five-hour train ride from Paris. Biarritz boasts vast beaches, majestic waves, and a mild climate year-round. It's only natural, then, that in 1957, Biarritz welcomed the first surfers on the European continent, and that the resort subsequently became the European surfing capital. The legendary mild climate also made possible the development of local thalassotherapy, and for the same reason, Biarritz is also known for its year-round golf.
When the coastline, which later became a resort, was a harsh, almost lifeless place, and Biarritz a poor village whose residents barely made ends meet by fishing, there lived a beautiful girl named Miarritz. The local inhabitants—several hundred men and women, with their own distinct religion and speaking a language no one understood—went out to sea every day to collect their meager catch and returned to a shore of harsh dunes covered in sun-dried, charred grass. Only the threatening ocean lashed these inhospitable shores in its fury. But one day, Miarritz had a wondrous dream: the god Yahweh appeared to her and promised to send the spirit of Martin, his servant, to this abandoned land. The spirit was to appear to the people in the form of a bird with multicolored plumage, carrying a golden-scaled fish in its beak, a symbol of the abundance and happiness that would one day come to these lands. The girl told the people of her dream when, a few days later, they discovered the beautiful bird on the shore.
This miraculous event, coupled with Miarritz's assurances, prompted the villagers to prepare boats and set out to sea. And this time they had a fabulous catch – the fishermen caught numerous whales frolicking in the sea. One day, during a severe storm, Miarritz, strolling along the shore, spotted a loaded fishing schooner that had run aground. She brought help and invited the crew – weary fishermen and sailors – into her home. They were seasoned sailors from Gascony. She married their captain, and from their two names the town's name was derived. Here, however, legend diverges from etymology, which prefers to believe the name comes from Bearrids, or Beiarrids (from beder – to see), meaning "place where someone has seen."
The most "star-studded" and fashionable of all the Atlantic resorts, Biarritz, located on the border of France and Spain, has happily led the parade of fashionable ocean resorts for several centuries. Despite its nine-century history, its splendor, youth, and charm remain undiminished: Biarritz excels in its ability to welcome and entertain guests like royalty.
The resort's vibrant cultural life lends its special spirit—festivals, vernissages, world premieres, fashion shows, concerts, and legendary shows. Here, every day becomes a celebration—and the incomparable taste of the ocean in the air, like sparkling wine, fills your whole being with a sense of joy. You'll happily join in on aristocratic sporting activities—equestrian sports, golf, tennis, and surfing. And finally, you'll be able to appreciate the collection of boutiques and world-renowned department stores of which Biarritz is rightfully proud.
If the time has come for you to organize a beautiful holiday, making the most of every minute, sunny Biarritz will meet and exceed the highest expectations of even the most sophisticated and ambitious guests.
