Before the First World War, Opatija (which means abbey), located in the east of the Istrian peninsula, was a fashionable resort of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Magnificent old hotels have been preserved to this day, and the beautiful embankments allow you to enjoy the wonderful views of the Bay of Rijeka.

In 1954, the Institute of Thalassotherapy opened here, establishing Opatija as a rehabilitation center. The Institute provides treatment and rehabilitation for patients with cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, rheumatic and skin diseases, as well as general health therapy. Today it is one of the most expensive resorts in the country.

Opatija has a unique ability to generate inspiration. G. Mahler, G. Puccini, A.P. Chekhov, J. Joyce, I. Duncan, and the French composer Jean-Charles de Paer dedicated the polka "Villa Angiolina" to Opatija.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS

A striking attraction of the resort is the Opatija Langomar  promenade with a total length of 12 km, laid from the Volosko harbor through the Opatija Park and Slatina beach to Lovran.

The Riviera has a humid subtropical climate of the Mediterranean type. In winter it is protected from the north-east wind, and in summer - from excessive heat.

The maximum number of tourists falls between May and September.

Opatija is surrounded by mountain ranges: Učka (1395 m), Sněžnik (1796 m), Risnjak (1528 m) and Planik (1273 m), from the east and south - the islands of Krk and Cres. It is the center of the resort stretching from Preluka, through Ičica, Ika, Lovran and Medveja to Mošenička Draga in the south. These towns form the so-called Liburnian Riviera or Opatija Riviera.

The nearest international airports are Pula (75 km), Zagreb (200 km), Ljubljana (135 km), Venice (208 km). Railway stations are Opatija-Matulija (5 km) and Rijeka (12 km).

Tourist areas

There are many well-equipped beaches on the Liburnian Riviera. In the center of the city is the Slatina beach, with an area for beginner swimmers.

Lido is a great place for all kinds of water sports. Thrill-seekers can jump from a six-meter diving board.

Medveja is a popular beach located 10 km from Opatija.

Moscenicka-Draga is a town south of Opatija, which has the longest beach.

Nightlife

For those who like to dance, Opatija has a large number of discos, night clubs, and open terraces for dancing. Anyone can try their luck at the Opatija casino.
