Luxury ski holidays in Cervinia

Breuil-Cervinia stands at approximately 2,050 metres in Italy’s Aosta Valley, directly below the Matterhorn, known locally as Monte Cervino. Its altitude supports a long winter season, while linked pistes make it possible to ski in Italy and Switzerland during the same day.

Cervinia, Valtournenche and Zermatt

The Italian side of Cervino Ski Paradise connects Cervinia with Valtournenche. Its broad blue and red pistes suit families, relaxed skiers and confident intermediates. Plan Maison provides accessible learning terrain, while the Cieloalto sector offers steeper and more technical descents.

The lifts continue through Plateau Rosa and Testa Grigia to Zermatt in Switzerland. The complete international area offers more than 300 kilometres of pistes and reaches elevations close to 3,900 metres. Skiers crossing the border need an international ski pass, and the connection may close when high winds or difficult weather affect the upper lifts.

The Ventina piste

Ventina is one of Cervinia’s defining runs. Beginning near Plateau Rosa, it descends towards the resort through long, open sections with continuous views of the Matterhorn. The considerable vertical drop and generous terrain make it particularly rewarding for intermediate skiers.

Stronger skiers can continue towards Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and explore the more varied terrain above Zermatt. The return journey should begin well before the final lifts: if the cross-border connection closes, returning to Italy requires a lengthy road transfer.

Matterhorn Alpine Crossing

Matterhorn Alpine Crossing links Cervinia and Zermatt via Testa Grigia and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. When every section is operating, the cable-car route allows pedestrians as well as skiers to travel between Italy and Switzerland.

The crossing can be combined with panoramic platforms, time in car-free Zermatt and lunch at a mountain restaurant. Tickets, operating hours and lift status should be checked before departure because the highest sections are particularly sensitive to wind.

Hotels below the Matterhorn

Hotel Hermitage & Spa is a five-star property overlooking the Matterhorn, with a restaurant, spa and transfers to the ski lifts. Families may prefer an apartment or chalet, while guests prioritising slope access can choose accommodation near the Plan Maison, Cretaz or Cieloalto lifts.

Hotel selection should consider more than room category. Distance from the lifts, shuttle arrangements, equipment storage and dining options all affect the rhythm of a ski holiday. The most desirable rooms should be reserved early for Christmas, New Year and peak February dates.

Summer in Cervinia

Summer brings hiking trails, lift-assisted mountain biking and access to the high mountains. Routes explore Lago Blu, Valtournenche and viewpoints across the Matterhorn massif. Glacier skiing and Matterhorn Alpine Crossing operate according to seasonal schedules and high-altitude conditions.

Five to seven nights work well for a winter stay. A tailor-made journey may include accommodation, private transfers from Turin or Milan, an Italian or international ski pass, equipment rental and private instruction.
