Colombo — Sri Lanka’s modern urban centre

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s largest city and commercial centre, bringing together colonial architecture, Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques, contemporary districts and an Indian Ocean waterfront. Although often used as the first or final stop on an island itinerary, the city merits more than a brief transit visit.

One or two nights are generally sufficient for a first stay. This allows time to explore the historic Fort district, the busy streets of Pettah, Gangaramaya Temple, the Colombo National Museum, Independence Square and the Galle Face Green promenade.

Who should include Colombo in their itinerary

Colombo suits travellers interested in contemporary Sri Lankan life, architecture, religious heritage and local cuisine. It also provides a convenient place to rest after an international flight or before leaving the island.

The city offers a broad selection of restaurants, shops, galleries and urban hotels. Colombo should not, however, be treated as a traditional beach resort. Travellers seeking a dedicated seaside stay should continue to a coastal region selected according to the season.

When to visit Colombo

Colombo can be visited throughout the year. December to March generally brings more comfortable conditions to Sri Lanka’s west coast, with lower rainfall making city walks and outdoor sightseeing easier to plan.

Tropical showers can occur during other months and may be intense but relatively brief. Because of the heat and humidity, walking tours are best arranged in the morning or later in the afternoon, with museums and indoor activities planned around the hottest hours.

Choosing where to stay

Fort and Galle Face are convenient for a short city break, business visit and access to the oceanfront. Cinnamon Gardens offers a greener and quieter setting close to museums, parks and several important landmarks.

Hotel selection should take traffic and daily sightseeing plans into account as well as room category and views. A property that appears close on a map may still involve a time-consuming transfer during busy periods.

Adding Colombo to a Sri Lanka journey

Colombo can be combined with the cultural sites of central Sri Lanka, the tea country, national parks or a coastal stay. The most efficient sequence depends on the season, arrival point and selected beach region.
