Colombo (in the Middle Ages, Colontot), founded by Arab merchants, reinforced by the Portuguese conquered by the Dutch, as a powerful capital, Englishmen, is equally the city of the old colonial past and the vibrant business centre of the present.
Colombo's business centre is the old western part of the city in Fort. There's still a lot of colonial architecture and parks, most hotels, jewelry stores, banks and offices.
There are many temples, mosques and consorts in the city. The most famous temple of Kelania Raj Maha Vihara. Fresca, which decorate the walls of the temple, tell stories from Buddha's many lives, visit Buddha's temple, myths and legends. The ancient temple is 9 km from Colombo and attracts many visitors.
Other values include the Sobor of Saint Lucia, the Temple of Saints Antonia and Petra, the main mosque of Jamul Alphara, the Hindu Temples of Ganechan, Old Katirezan and New Katirezan.
The old Colombo trading and colonial neighbourhoods have, in most cases, maintained inexorable colors with churches, narrow and curves, channels, trade areas and small parks.
